What to do in l’Ametlla de Mar?

Get lost along its fishing port and the promenade contemplating the boats and the sailors at work. Stroll through the cobbled streets that surround the port and watch the sunset. Travel the GR-92 and enjoy its dreamy beaches. Taste typical dishes of the area on a terrace facing the sea with a good wine from Terra Alta. Visit the municipal market, which is open from Monday to Saturday, on Mondays and Thursdays, you can go to the market square, where there are stalls for clothing and accessories and on Saturdays for fruit and vegetables.

If you want to know more about the town, we advise you to visit the fish market from four in the afternoon, you will be able to see how the boats arrive at port, the catch of the day and the fish auction, which later you can taste in any one of the town’s restaurants. L’Ametlla de Mar has a complete Mediterranean diet, the basis of its gastronomy is based on the cuisine of sailors, that is why its typical dishes are the suquet calero, the fideua and the arrossejat. Near L’Ametlla de Mar

L’Ametlla de Mar is located in a strategic point between the Costa Dorada and Les Terres de l’Ebre, which allows you to carry out more activities and get to know the surroundings. Starting from the south, you cannot miss the Ebro Delta Natural Park, the most extensive aquatic habitat in Catalonia and it is only 30 minutes away. The weather in l’Ametlla de Mar

It has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers. In summer the weather is warm, but the sea breeze helps lower the temperature. In spring and autumn, the temperatures are maintained and the days are pleasant, at night it can cool a bit. It’s fair to say that Terres de l’Ebre is a recommended area to travel with pets since there’s a wide variety of services on offer. Here’s a look at some of the many things you can do in the area. To begin with, hiking enthusiasts have the option of following all the different routes offered in the area, including the GR 92 that runs from Ametlla de Mar to Ampolla, passing through the town of El Perelló and the “Via Verde” that goes from Tortosa to Alcañiz. A great option is to discover the many beaches in the area. During the winter season and outside of the bird nesting season all beaches accept pets. The “Bassa de l’Arenal” beach, which is located in the Riumar urbanization, is the only beach that accepts pets throughout the year, it has specific signs indicating this.

Also, all the nature lovers have many different options. The first option is to take the route through the Tancada and Encanyissada lagoons, it is a 26 KM route that offers various observation towers and also reading panels with interesting information about the lagoons and the birds. It’s the best place for a bit of bird watching and if you do not want to do the entire route on foot it’s easily accessible by car.

The final alternative is to go to “als Ullals de Baltasar”, a set of small freshwater lagoons surrounded by an amazing green landscape. You will find a rich diversity of fauna and flora, a perfect place to enjoy with your pets.

Discover Ebro Delta Nature Park

The Nature Park is located in Les Terres de l’Ebre. It became a Nature Reserve in 1983 and it belongs to the Les Terres de l’Ebre Biosphere Reserve. It was divided in two parts, the North and the South. That is why our advice is to plan two visiting days in order to get to explore this amazing place.

To get around there we advise you to go by car, since there is no public transport. You can go through l’Ampolla or through Camarles. We recommend l’Ampolla route, this way you can benefit from visiting the town.

There are available parking areas for cars and caravans at all points of interest, so it will be easy for you to get there. A piece of advice: park your car and rent a bike, there are many companies that offer this service. To discover the Delta you can choose between so many routes which are adapted to both adults and children.

During the tour you will be surrounded by the rice fields, that change every season. It’s really spectacular!

To begin with, there is the North part of The Ebro Delta Nature Park, which is located in the Baix Ebre region. In this region you can visit a town called Deltebre, and its most touristy area: Riumar. Nevertheless, you definitely cannot miss La Bassa de les Olles, La Punta del Fangar, La Marquesa beach or La Bassa del Garxal. ¡Let’s begin!

La Bassa de les Olles

It’s the smallest llagoon in the Ebro Delta Nature Park. You will find it between rice fields and dunes and you can get there from l’Ampolla. Don’t miss it because you will be able to do some birdwatching and, if you are lucky, you will find flamingos during certain months of the year.

La Platja de la Marquesa y La Punta del Fangar

To get to La Marquesa beach or to El Fangar lighthouse you’ll need to follow the signs (the way are well indicated). Once there you can park on your way to the beach, always keep to the sides so others can pass freely, or you can also park in front of the restaurant Los Vascos.

You will see La Marquesa beach to your right. The dunes on this beach are the most well conserved, it is an unspoiled beach with crystal clear water and golden sand and it’s more than 1 kilometer long. What is curious about this beach is that you can find dunes inside the water as well.

To the left of Los Vascos restaurant you will find the beginning of El Fangar beach, which is the way to go to El Fangar lighthouse. La Punta del Fangar is the peninsula that penetrates into the sea in the North part of the Ebro River mouth, an idyllic place to relax. If you want to walk to El Fangar lighthouse you must take into account that you will be walking in the sand and it will take you approximately two and a half hours.

Check the weather in advance, since it’s best to visit on a calm day. This way you can take a dip halfway to the lighthouse. We recommend to bring water and sun cream, since there is no shade along the 4 kilometer walk. On your way to the lighthouse, on your right, take a look at the beautiful dunes that have been growing and moving throughout the years. You don’t have access because that area is protected and is part of the Ebro Delta Nature Park fauna and vegetation salvation program. The closer you get you will be able to see the lighthouse. Once you get there take as many pictures as you want, let your imagination fly!

Desembocadura

The mouth zone of the Ebro river is divided between the North hemidelta and the South hemidelta. In the mouth are three protected natural spots of great importance, El Garxal, L’Illa de Sant Antoni and La Illa Buda (two little islands). The access to both islands is restricted and you must ask the Park for permission. El Garxal is an available zone near Riumar, you can go across it by walking or by bike. You will find different bird viewpoints.

In the mouth zone of Riumar you will find restaurants, gift shops and boats to visit the mouth and get to the open sea.

Deltebre and Riumar

Deltebre is located in the middle of the Ebro Delta Nature Park. With all the tourism, it still maintains its traditional agricultural spirit. Riumar is its residential area and we recommend it to you because there you can find Riumar beach, which is almost 4km long. With wood walkways to get to the beach, it has beach bars so that you can cool off on the hottest days.

Then we have the South zone of the Ebro Delta Nature Park. This zone of the South hemidelta is in the Montsià region. El Poblenou del Delta, La Punta de la Banya, El Trabucador, L’Encanyissada, La Tancada and Las Salinas de la Trinidad, lots of enjoyable places to see.

Poblenou del Delta

El Poblenou del Delta is between L’Encanyissada and La Tancada, two lagoons that we will talk about later on. This little agricultural fishing town is made up of beautiful white houses and one of many magical places to discover; for example, La Torre de Sant Joan, a watchtower that was constructed in 1576.

L’Encanyissada is the largest lagoon in The Delta Nature Park, it has a total surface area of around 15 square Km! The journey to visit the lagoon starts at an emblematic building called La casa de fusta it has ornithological museum situated in one of its rooms. The lagoon is surrounded by bird observation points.

La Tancada is the second largest lagoon in El Delta de l’Ebre. It’s just East of El Poblenou del Delta. If you go all through La Tancada by bike you will discover some old abandoned salt mines. You’ll be able to identify them easily because of the white salt crust that you find on its surface during summer.

Punta de la Banya and El Trabucador

El Trabucador is a long 5km sand barrier that is around 100-200m wide, to get to the Punta de la Banya peninsula you must go along it. Its main attraction are the amazing sunsets, since you have the sea left and right and this creates some truly amazing colours. La Bahia dels Alfacs is the most natural bay in Europe.

Les Salines de la Trinitat is at the end of La Punta de la Banya, If you are lucky you will see some flamingos, they nest there for large parts of the year.

If you go during the summer we recommend that you take into account the rising tides and the intense heat.

This area was particularly affected by Storm Gloria in 2020 and also by other storms that have been taking place over the recent years. La Barra del Trabucador is now a lot less wide and it has even been broken at times due to a lack of sediment and sand. We ask you to respect the area and to obey the regulations indicated on the all the signs. As the area was badly affected, the municipalities and the government have agreed to impose a payment on all the vehicles that want to access to La Barra del Trabucador. We recommend you visit the Ebro Delta during throughout the year in order to appreciate the different contrasts of the rice paddy cycles.
